Family Story
Most residents know
Ralph Bauer through his many, many years on the city
council, including as mayor. Charlene started "Friends
of the Library" in their livingroom, and both have been
involved in numerous committees, boards and
organizations - all with an eye toward making life
better for residents of the city they love.
The Bauers came to
Huntington Beach in 1964, with children Eric and Elaine,
after Ralph had read about
Huntington Harbour in a
Sunday newspaper ad. The population was about 30,000 in
those days. Ralph immediately jumped into public
service, joining the newly constituted Personnel Board
in 1965. He was named Citizen of the Year in 2004.
After their beautiful
waterfront home, their favorite places in Huntington
Beach are the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, the Pier and the
Central Library. They also enjoy dining at Arbors
restaurant, and say that visitors are often surprised
that we have a great Art Center and
Equestrian Center.
Children Eric and
Elaine and their families are both professionals, and
their own children love and appreciate Huntington Beach.
"We're a very close family," says Ralph. And their
secret' "You have to give of yourself to each other.
It's not about meeting the other person half way, you
have to be willing to give 100%; that's love," he added.
"We plan to live here
for the rest of our lives," said Ralph. "The rest of the
family plans
to do exactly the same thing," added Charlene.
"Huntington Beach has the glorious beach,
great weather, wonderful park system, outstanding
schools, and most of all friends and fellow
volunteers," said Ralph.
"How can you improve on
paradise'" said Charlene. Both smiled.
