In 2009, the Surfin' Sundays Concert Series has a new reason to come and enjoy the concert. The opening of the Shorebreak Hotel offers a location no more than a block or two to the concert itself.

Huntington Beach, Calif. offers one of the best free summer concert series programs on the West Coast. The concerts are all held outdoors in perfect weather this region is known for, and the concerts bring some of the finest, diverse sounds to the city that is home to outstanding musicians of all genre.

For tourists visiting, the easiest concerts to attend are walking distance from the great beach hotels and resorts. For HB locals, the drive to any of the concerts is no more than 15 minutes from most locations in the city.

The free summer concerts hold a long tradition in HB. In addition to the the Big 3: Surfing Museum; Pier Plaza City Sponsored Concerts: and Central Park Huntington Beach City Band Concerts; one concert series that disappeared several years ago at Golden West College outdoor amphitheatre now has been somewhat replaced with free concerts in the courtyard at Bella Terra Mall.

Nearby concerts we've also enjoyed are a free summer concert series at Eisenhower Park overlooking the beach at Seal Beach; Westminster Civic Center Plaza concerts; Long Beach concerts at MarketPlace, and several parks, and free concerts at the bandshell on Balboa Peninsula overlooking the Balboa Pier.

Huntington Beach paid concert series BBJAZZ features monthly smooth jazz concerts that are held at Central Library Theatre and hotels during the holidays. These concerts charge a fee (usually begins at $35 - up) and the proceeds benefit special causes.

The concerts bring jazz, funk, rock, pop, blues, Cajun, classical, swing, surfing, Rhythm and Blues, Rockabilly, Soul, hip hop and a variety of types of music to this band-progressive town where live bands are featured every night of the year in local pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs. Free concerts are available in public open-air concerts at Pier Plaza, Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum parking lot and  Huntington Central Park.  Golden West College used to feature free outdoor summer concerts but currently only offers pay concerts with student and faculty performances during the school year.

Also available for a fee are top wave artists appearing on KTWV, brought to the city from the well-connected Bennish team that raises funds for Autism. Those concerts are featured throughout the year in the Huntington Beach Central Library and Cultural Center and a special Concert in the Park is held in September with a full day of smooth jazz from top artists.

Many fantastic musicians come from Huntington Beach. One of the original surf bands, Jan & Dean is fortunate to have Dean Torrence living in Huntington Beach. There's jazz composer and pianist, Keiko Matsui. One of the members of Korn owns Tuna Town on Main Street.  Tom Kubis at Golden West College is world renowned for his jazz compositions. Music is the heart and soul of Surf City. Golden Bear was once a night club bringing top artists to the city to perform.
