Huntington Beach, 06/22/09 – It truly was "CHILI AT THE
BEACH" this past Saturday Rain in June? No way! But there they were:
big fat drops drenching the first five blocks of Downtown Main Street while
the 16 Chili Contestants and many vendors and entertainers set up in their
reserved spots.
The odd weather
encouraged visitors to purchase chili tickets / scorecards early in order to
warm up by tasting & judging the chili. The sun finally came out, and the
day was beautiful, as anticipated.
Chili contestants
included: Aloha Grill Team with "Haleakala Heat Chili" captured the
attention of all to win "Most Enthusiastic / Creative Booth;
Avilla's El Ranchito Team with "Papa Gabriel Chili Beans"; Beauty
Society Team served pink "Divalicious Chili" in pink cups; Black Bull
Chophouse Team Captain Jimmy Martinez waived a shovel as he claimed they
would "bury their competition" with "Say Summen Chili!!!!", It
was a repeat "Overall Best Taste" championship for Duke's "Hawaiian Luau
Pork Chicken Chili"; Fred's Tres Amigos Team served up "Frexican
Chili"; Gallagher's Pub & Grill Team had continual requests for
refills of "AGGIE'S CHILI"; HB Beer Company Bandits won
"Most Creative Chili Name" with "Watch Out For Your Back Side";
HB Motorcycles Team sizzled with "Hi-Octane Chili"; Jinx & Julie's
Psycho Chili Team had everyone psyched out with their "Psycho Chili";
Killarney's Chili Industries had a great western theme going on with
"Malone's Medicine Chili"; Long Board Chili Restaurant & Bar Team is
always popular with "Long Board Chili"; No Ka Oi Team served up an
international style "No Ka Oi's World Famous Chili"; Baja Sharkeez Team
had delicious "Tri-Tip Chili"; Smokin' Mo's BBQ Team was smokin'
hot with "Mo's Tri-Tip Chili"; Sugar Shack Café Team was adorably
sweet as they served "Sugar, Spice & Everything Nice Chili".
This Second Annual
“Chili At The Beach” family fun event included a Business Expo, a Magician,
Special Attractions, Children’s Activities, Street Performers, Father’s Day
specials, Jousting Displays, Auto and Motorcycle exhibits, a Surf City Art
Show along with an Interactive Surf City Centennial Birthday Card, and much
more!
A portion of the event
proceeds benefit Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). "It is an
honor to contribute to CHOC through the Chili at the Beach event.
Encouraging families to come downtown on Father's Day weekend to enjoy the
variety of activities in the fresh air and sunshine at the beach is key to
having a successful downtown environment. I would like to thank all the BID
Stakeholders that have shared their time and talent to make sure that this
special weekend went so smoothly," said Connie Pedenko, Executive Director /
Consultant for BID.
The first three blocks
of Main Street were closed to traffic for the two-day event.
On Saturday, the “Golden
West Pops” (a 40-piece band) started off the day.
Father’s Day Sunday
featured many specials just for Dad at businesses downtown. The day started
with “The Nocturnes”, who are the official house band of KDOC TV.
Michael Moroneso, the
Chair for the BID Ambassadors, Chili at the Beach Event Task Force Leader,
and Manger of Surf City Harley-Davidson on Main Street said of the event, "I
would like to thank Harley-Davidson of Westminster for allowing me to take
the time to lead this event. It is a privilege to work with CHOC and the BID
to serve the community and help bring success to downtown Surf City USA."
