Huntington Beach, Calif.―June
is in bloom with free summer concerts at the beach, near the
beach and sometimes in the park (Central Park). Music
provides the harmony in our lives and offers an ocean of
opportunities for kids to explore; it opens a door to things
such as creative expression and even can aid in
concentration, according to a study that discovered music
can be instrumental in enhancing thinking processes,
especially if you listen to classical music.
In Huntington Beach, the
concerts are free and offer a variety of performers.
Granted, you'll seldom find Beethoven or Bach performed
outdoors as the music tends toward contemporary, alternative
or surf. One Surf Museum volunteer, Linda Miller, has put
together a fantastic line up of surf concerts. For several
years Miller has taken on this formidable task of inviting
and arranging for the best bands in the surf music genre to
trek to Huntington Beach, California to play. It is one of
the finest surf concerts series in the USA, and it's free!
The surf concerts sometimes are performed at Pier Plaza
adjacent to the Huntington Beach Pier (Pacific Coast Highway
and Main Street). The other performance venue for this
lively, rocking daytime, outdoor shows is Huntington Beach
International Surfing Museum at 411 Olive three blocks from
Pier Plaza.
Another concert series is
organized by City of Huntington Beach Community Services
staffer, Naida Osline. Previewing literally hundreds of band
tapes and demos, Osline chooses a broad mix of performers
that range from rockabilly to African, Cuban, swing, jazz
and good ol' rock 'n roll. The performers mostly are known
for their high-energy shows and usually have a long list of
credits that include record releases. Again, these
outstanding concerts are free! Sponsored by the City
of Huntington Beach, the concerts are held on specific
summer weekends at Pier Plaza overlooking the Huntington
Beach Pier and Pacific Ocean in Huntington Beach.
Does it get any better'
Yes! There are also free concerts in Central Park on
weekends. Sometimes you have to shift into musical overload
as you rush from the pier to the park to take in all the
quality music in a 5 mile radius. But it's worth the effort
to experience the old-fashioned, shaded lawn blanket and
picnic basket concert under the huge eucalyptus and oaks
that send out a fragrant, woodsy scent as you watch the
Huntington Beach Concert Band series that features the
city's very own band, plus other guest artists. The music in
this venue is usually jazz to classic, show tunes to pops.
The quality of artists are world class. The musicians often
come from the music industry or may teach music at
universities.
Huntington Beach is so
understated in its musical endeavors, yet if delve into the
list of performers who call this Southern California beach
city "home", you'll find an incredible list of artists,
performers and credits that make you say, Wow! This
place has lots of talent and in the summer, you can feel it,
hear it and see it in the sunlight or shade, for free.
