Kite surfing has a huge following on the
California Coast. Traveling the length of the state, you can
see the sport nearly everywhere you go. Huntington Beach
features one kite surfing store and one in nearby Sunset
Beach, where you can get "geared up" and go. In Seal
Beach, just over the Anaheim Bay bridge from Huntington's
northernmost coastal location on Pacific Coast Highway,
there is even a Windsurfing Rigging Area donated by the Seal
Beach Sailors.
Windsurfing
The first patent on a windsurf board was
issued in 1968 to Hoyle Schweitzer and Jim Drake. The
Southern Californians felt the drawbacks of surfing could be
overcome through innovation. The "Windsurfer" was born as an
idea and product to combine the sports of surfing and
sailing. Though not an original idea when patented, the two
men brought the sport into popularity.
