Sunset Beach,
Calif.--What happens when the cash-strapped
County of Orange in California divests its land
holdings and removes the 105+ year old community
of Sunset Beach from its list of communities it
serves' The town was placed in the sphere of
influence of nearby Huntington Beach, and as a
result, got annexed, despite its efforts to form
its own city.
Such is life in Sunset
Beach, a town that was made famous through
television. Peter Gunn show in the late 1950's
used Mother's bar as a set, and Hollywood glam
painted an unreal brush in the "Sunset Beach"
soap opera, an Aaron Spelling production that
ran from 1997-1999. Life in Sunset Beach took on
a real Hollywood spin when academy-award winning
actress Sandra Bullock and her husband Jesse
James bought a beach house on the sand in Sunset
Beach. Her accolades brought attention to the
community, but her divorce brought even more
attention as paparazzi stood outside the home on
the community greenbelt with word that Sandra
Bullock was moving out.
Sunset Beach has
long been known by tourists as the free beach.
Just 20 feet away at Bolsa Chica State Beach
cars must pay $15 to park and see the beach,
while Sunset Beach has featured free parking and
beach access. The easy-going lifestyle,
traditions such as the annual Mother's Day Art
Show, bars with motorcycle crowds at Mother's,
Turc's, and classic restaurants such as Captain
Jack's, Harpoon Harry's and J.King Neptune's,
all are recognized establishments where even the
the celebs like to go and be in cognito for the
most part.
Sunset Beach is its
very own place in heart & soul. Huntington
Beach's annexation may change some of that with
new licensing fees, new regulations, and more
scrutiny on the lifestyle and old ways of doing
things, but one thing remains the
same--spectacular sunsets continue to grace this
beach, and make the town's folk believe that
there's nothing like it on earth!
Sunset Aquatic Regional Park features a
public launch ramp, covered picnic patios
and views of Huntington Harbour and Peter's
Landing Marina.
