Christmas,
held every year on December 25, is a celebration that is
enjoyed by Huntington Harbour home owners who decorated
their houses, boats, boat docks and waterways with
displays for an annual event, the Huntington Harbour
Cruise of Lights. Also celebrated during the Cruise of
Lights event is Hanukkah. It is celebrated for eight
days and nights, starting on the 25th of Kislev on the
Hebrew calendar (which is November-December on the
Gregorian calendar). In Hebrew, the word "Hanukkah"
means "dedication." The holiday commemorates the
rededication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem after the
Jews' 165 B.C.E. victory over the Hellenist Syrians.
Antiochus, the Greek King of Syria, outlawed Jewish
rituals and ordered the Jews to worship Greek gods.
When you
take the boat tour along the Huntington Harbour manmade
channels for the holiday celebration, you'll sometimes
see Menorahs or candelabras in windows instead of a tree
or nativity scene.
The
annual holiday fun
event held in Huntington Harbour attracts tourists and
Huntington Beach residents. As interesting as the light
displays are the houses themselves. The odd facts and
buys and sells of homes is revealed by Realtor
volunteers giving the tour or locals in the know.
Each year you may see the home of the Zambonis who
created the ice machines that sweep and smooth the
floors at ice rinks and professional sports arenas.
The Helen Grace candy heiress home has been sold after
Helen passed away several years ago but its size and
