Huntington Beach, Calif.--Old World Village provides
a welcoming atmosphere with
many events throughout
the year to delight tourists and the locals who love
to dance, eat and sing. One of the favorite events
is the annual Plum Festival, celebrating a family
tradition that Bischoff family who founded Old World
Village have enjoyed for many, many seasons.
Grandma used to take the fresh, ripe plums and
turn them into tasty desserts. After she passed, the
family decided to share her recipe and love of the
the delicious fruit with the public. The event has
grown each year and has become a focal point of
summer for many who look forward to a sampling of
what the fall season welcomes--Oktoberfest.
"Grossmama" Elly Schwarzer, who lived from 1895
to 1998 baked her famous plum cake, or
'Pflaumenkuchen' for Dolores Bischoff's
birthday each August. She baked her final cake
nearly ending a tradition when she turned 100 years
old. The Bischoff family owns and operates Old World
Village German Restaurant, home to the famous
Oktoberfest.
Enjoy the afternoon at the Annual Plum festival
in memory of Grossmama. The family invites you
to share the tradition that began with public
participation in 1997 when they bought a few hundred
pounds of Italian Plums, only ripe in August and
instructed the bakers to bake it, some plain, some
with streusel, but all mouthwatering good. For more
festivities they added plum crepes, Berliner Ballen
w/ plum filling, plum jam, plum juice & schnapps and
of course a live band for your dancing pleasure.
The kids can enjoy a moon bounce &carnival games.
Wear purple. Come with your family and friends. Free
admission for all. Time: 2 to 6 p.m. Location: Old
World German Restaurant, 7561 Center Ave.,
Huntington Beach, CA.
Plum Festival sometimes coincides with the dachshund
races and includes a variety of hot meals you can
purchase, tasty brews from Germany (on draft) and
some live entertainment that gets everyone dancing.
There is usually something exciting for the kids,
as well. The family-fun entertainment is not to be
missed as the perfect break from the beach.
