Blessing of the Waves
Sometimes we need to count our
blessing. Dogs receive blessings in Long
Beach at the Haute Parade, the dates at
the Date Festival in Riverside County
are blessed each year,
Mission San
Francisco Solano de Sonoma's
Blessing of the Olives happens in
Sonoma, Canoga Parks celebrates Dead of
the Dead with an annual blessing, and Huntington Beach
blesses its waves with a fairly new
celebration established in 2008.
Organizations involved in the
event have included Surfrider
Foundation and the Interfaith
Council.
Established to honor solidarity
with other faith religions the Roman
Catholic Diocese of Orange hosts
Blessing of the Waves, an
inter-religious community event to show
spiritual appreciation for the ocean and
all that it gives the planet and its
population. This gathering demonstrates
concern for a cherished environment
already compromised by the effects of
climate change, toxic emissions, and
other pollution.
