Huntington Beach Circa 1923 When the Huntington Beach A Number 1 oil well was brought in on May 24, 1920, it signaled the beginning of the billion-dollar oil industry, which would bring an economic boom to the city. No one dreamed of the riches that had lingered beneath the ground for thousands of years. Wells and drilling were a common scene for
80 years and are still apparent, though dwindling, in Huntington Beach today. In
1965, there were 2,270 wells in Huntington Beach. Approximately 19 million
barrels were produced that year, bringing in more than $45 million for their
owners. It is only recently that the city has come to realize the lost revenue
from an industry which helped build an infrastructure but no longer pumps in the
dollars from "black gold."
