Duke Kahanamoku Stamp was issued on August 25, 2002. Pier Plaza Aug. 25  Noon - 30 minute Duke Kahanamoku first day issue (on the mainland) of the "Duke" 37-cent postage stamp. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated individuals from the Huntington Beach International Surf Museum, the stamp became a reality after a letter campaign and lobbying were met with success.

The dedication graphic below includes these words:

Hawaiian swimmer, surfer, and Olympic gold medalist Duke Kahanamoku (1890 - 1968) was renowned not only for his athletic prowess, but also for his grace, humility, and good sportsmanship. He is widely considered to be the father of international surfing.

Be sure to visit the permanent Duke Kahanamoku exhibit at the International Surf Museum, 411 Olive Avenue, Huntington Beach, CA 92648.
