You can see these engraved granite stones
any time, as they are permanently installed
in the sidewalks in front of Jacks
Surfboards at the corner of Main Street and
Pacific Coast Highway. However, some of the
honorees do attend the event in which they
are honored (sometimes a recipient has died,
but is remembered for his or her
contributions to the sport of surfing.
Open to the public, the ceremony normally
occurs around 10 a.m. and the public is
invited to attended. There is limited
seating so much of the audience must stand
and watch. The crowds sometimes spill into
the street which is not unusual during the
U.S. Open, known for its incredible crowds
of people. If you want to attend this
event, it is a typical ceremony with
speeches, thank-yous, and then some photo
ops. While the audience that attends
is mostly surf industry, family, friends,
and fans, it's an opportunity for you to
learn a little more about what makes surfing
great and what the surf industry and peers
look for in determining who receives those
granite plaques in the ground.
Here's the list of
inductees over many years.
