Newland House Museum,
Huntington Beach, California -
Visitors to California often state
that it doesn't feel like Christmas
in Huntington Beach. They look
at the lighted palm trees, see Santa
Claus wearing shorts and flip flops
and wonder how locals can ever gain
that old fashioned spirit others
equate with blankets of snow and
frigid weather. Newland House is
decked out in holiday style with red
bows, Christmas lights on an old
fashioned tree and warmth and charm
reminiscent of the Victorian era in
which the house was built in 1898.
Guests can tour the Newland House on
Saturdays and Sundays and enjoy
seeing the rays of warm, filtered
sunlight cut a path through the
branches of the holiday tree that's
all decked out with old-fashioned
ornaments for the public to see.

Normally giving tours
on Saturdays and Sundays is
historian Jerry Persons, who knows
the history of the Newland family as
extensively as anyone around. Take
his tour and learn about life in
1898 Huntington Beach, a simpler
time in many ways. Persons may
describe how the Newland boys
snuggled up and slept in one bed in
a second floor bedroom you can see
on the Newland House tour. If that
doesn't conjure up images of cozy
living, look at the Victorian doll
collection, the quilted bedspreads
the Newland girls made that grace
the girls' beds and the antique
sewing machine in a room featuring
some of the most sweeping views of
Huntington Beach around. Peering
past the beautiful setting, the
antique wood floors and historic
furnishings through the spacious
windows, its easy to imagine how the
Newland family members would have
looked out and seen the ocean and
gained a sense of peace and
serenity. That feeling exists today
when you visit the house and take
the tour.
